PUBLISHED IN: 2014
THE AUTHOR: Mindela Ruby
THE PUBLISHER: Pen L Publishing. http://www.pen-l.com
SUMMARY: Punk rock riot girl Boop has the indomitable soul of a dreamer and the train wreck life of an unruly compulsive. When her dying neighbor requires her help, Boop vows to clean up her act and goes chasing a comeback in Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. Her mess-ups, kind heart and willingness to change make Boop an endearing rogue, but most unforgettable is her antic, hilarious, no taboo voice. MOSH IT UP is a must read exposé of love’s waywardness…and its potential to redeem.
THE BACK STORY: The story decided I would write it, not the other way around. One morning, immediately after I returned from the Squaw Valley Community of Writers summer conference, I woke up at the crack of dawn and, unpremeditated, sat and wrote the first chapter of the book even before I prepared my cherished tea and toast. I’d never written with such wild abandon before. Unfortunately, after that auspicious start, it took over ten years to finish the book, with several rewrites along the way. To research, I went to some Sex And Love Addicts Anonymous twelve step groups and listened to a lot of punk music. I also had to come to terms with my own history of addictive behavior.
WHY THIS TITLE?: Moshing is wild, physical dancing and thrashing to punk music, usually in a “mosh pit.” In younger years I was known to let loose in some mosh pits when the urge struck.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO READ IT? Anyone who has ever grappled with compulsive desire of any type, with the yearning to feel accepted and loved, or with a tendency to self-sabotage and thereby ruin the very thing you want most in life will find familiar territory in MOSH IT UP. Plus you will never encounter a more raw and unique narrator than Boop, the underground heroine of MOSH IT UP.
“What a glorious, glorious novel this is — funny, sad, angry, poignant, bawdy, tough, excruciatingly sad, and then bowl-you-over funny again. Mosh It Up is a literary marvel. It’s complex and rich and humane. It’s original. It’s a linguistic kaleidoscope. It’s not just moving, it’s searing. It’s an A-list stunner from start to finish.” –Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried
“Her playful way of using language isn’t the only thing about Ruby that reminds me of Dorothy Parker; her mordant humor is another, particularly when she is writing about her character’s frequently unfortunate sexual escapades. When Boop talks about sex and the men she pairs with, a lot of the words Ruby puts in her mouth are just laugh-out-loud funny.” –William Wallace, in Pulp Hack Confessions
AUTHOR PROFILE: I’m a creature of contradictions. While I was pursuing my PhD in English, I happened to get involved in a college punk rock radio station; by day I studied Chaucer and narratology, and by night I was stage diving at a San Francisco club known as the Fab Mab.
AUTHOR COMMENTS: “I’ve always loved books about outsiders that reveal how people on the margins have the same needs and longings of the insiders.”
