SUMMARY: Hobos and High Finance have little in common until the day an investment scammer deceives Gina and Mickey McGee, steals their retirement savings, and forces foreclosure on the family farm. Evicted along with her grandparents, Ellie McGee drops out of college and ends up homeless, living in a hobo encampment amongst a group of vagabonds.
Ellie hooks up with Tick Simmons, and together they plan revenge on the scammers that stole the farm and also killed Tick’s twin brother, a resident of the hobo camp. Tick and Ellie team up with the odd-ball drifters, recruit a senator and a rogue intelligence agent and an ex-Special Forces veteran, then reverse the game and scam the scammers, engaging in a diabolical and ingenious plot to retaliate in an all-or-nothing high stakes gamble.
THE BACK STORY: I began this book with a few notes about my interaction with veterans and the homeless plight many vets endure. I’m a veteran as well – US Navy, Submarine Force, and lead several counseling programs dealing with violence and returning war vets, and some of the problems they encounter while re-socializing into normal home-life.
In addition, during a college break one summer, I traveling all over the USA, camping and meeting “road people and homeless folks” – and when I worked with the migrant harvesters in California agriculture communities.
Not all are mental cases, as some seem to think, and many choose it as a unique lifestyle. Some were victims of financial issues beyond their control. It made for an interesting summer, and opened my eyes to the odd friendships, unique adventures, and unusual problems some face in that lifestyle. So, these characters became a composite of extremely interesting folks I met on the road, blended with personal experience and imagination.
WHY THIS TITLE?: Hobo’s or vagabonds, or travelers present a unique financial picture, and occasionally team up to “rescue” one of their own from human predators.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO READ IT? Anyone wants a peek into the life of America on the road – and the damage financial scams present to innocent victims. This tells a potent story about several homeless travelers, one a former Special Forces operative with powerful connections, others with unique skill-set from a “former life”. After one family was ruined by a fraudulent investment scam, including a real estate developer and a crooked judge, the vagabonds organize an unusual and very dangerous method to extract a sweet revenge.
“I discovered the talent behind Bill Delorey when I found his first book on Kindle; Shuffle an Impulse and decided I wanted to read more by this author. Once again Mr. Delorey has come up with a thrilling read with Hobo’s Revenge. Homeless or Hobo, sometimes they are one and the same and sometimes not. Deception, deceit and murder stalk the pages of this gripping novel. The reader is drawn into the suspense from the very first page and it doesn’t let up until the last page. There is no guessing or anticipating what is going to happen until it does. The actions and dialogue suggest that Mr. Delorey has spent some time in a homeless camp to learn the habits and lingo. With each page, I felt as if I were eavesdropping private conversations around the fire pit. The characters, including those of lesser importance, were believable and well-rounded. This is one book, I hoped would never end. It is hard to write this review simply because my mouth would probably give something away. Good job capturing and holding the attention of another reader. I will be looking for more in the future, I hope.” — Amazon reader, July 20, 2016.
AUTHOR PROFILE: Like many authors, when a youngster I read a lot, and dreamed about the glamorous, glorious, and rich lifestyle of a writer. Years of college and cultural experience combined and made that a reality – only to find out it as much a grind as any other profession, but for a lot less money.
But, nothing floats my boat more than introducing a new and interesting character – whether a white hat or a black hat – then sit and watch the interaction take place – adventures the author can’t always control.
Nothing brings me more pleasure than these imaginary individuals taking on a life of their own – and I imagine that’s true of any author, and any reader. We hope so anyway..
