If any story ever cried out for a sequel, it was “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” — and British author Dawn Sinclair couldn’t resist.
She describes her “Children of Hamelin” this way: “The ‘absolute truth’ about what happened to the children who were piped away from Hamelin by the Pied Piper, written from the perspectives of Simon and Jessop, two of the children, now grown to adulthood. Strange then that there are vast differences in their stories? Well, such is the nature of truth, don’t you think? It is often coloured by the viewpoint of its witnesses.”
Our other two offerings this week are also liberally seasoned with the author’s philosophies.
In “American Anger,” H.L. Nix ponders why nearly everyone in the U.S. seems to be grumpy these days. Meanwhile, Tara Thompson follows up “Not Another Superhero” (featured on Snowflakes last year) with “Just Another Sidekick,” a lively adventure tale with, at its core, some musings on the sources and meaning of love.

“CHILDREN OF HAMELIN,” BY DAWN SINCLAIR.
Dawn writes: “As a coming of age story, this would appeal to young adults but on a broader landscape, all adults might like to debate whether my whole premise – that truth is not universal at all – is valid. Can 2 boys from the same (or similar) background describe with absolute accuracy events that occur to each but come to very different conclusions? Of course they can. How they deal with the dilemmas in their parent-less new existence? That, in itself, is worth the trip to discover.
“AMERICAN ANGER,” BY H.L. HIX
This is a period of very visible anger in American public life. American Anger tries to ask where that anger comes from, what it has to do with our history, and our future. Whatever a reader’s political views (whatever that reader is angry about!), it is worth contextualizing them, and that is what American Anger tries to do.
Says one reviewer: “Hix doesn’t speak for or against anything so much as out of America’s climate of rage, as though channeling raw feeling itself. It’s a disturbingly accurate take on current events. Unless you are made of stone, you will find, in these troubled and troubling times, some of your heart echoed here.”
“JUST ANOTHER SIDEKICK,” BY TARA THOMPSON.
The title, Just Another Sidekick, deals with the inner-struggle of the heroine, Samantha Addison. She was physically hurt during a tragic event seven years earlier. When her body never completely healed and left her with physical limitations, it caused her to start living her life from the shadows. Instead of taking the lead, she chose to be as invisible as possible.
Now, with simply surviving taking every once of strength, intellect, and wit she’s got, Samantha is being pushed out of her self-imposed limitations and back into living. She’s got to decide whether she’s strong enough to live as – and/or with – the hero of her story, or be just another sidekick.
